Numeracy and Ludicity

If I were to give an abstract about how I’d describe Numeracy and Ludicity addressing the “media literacy problem”, it’s worth talking about my relationship to learning Tagalog as a mother tongue.

It’s a common conception for Fil-Ams or Filipino immigrant children to understand the language without being able to speak it. When growing up, I was immersed in Filipino tv culture and conversed with my grandmother offhandedly as a toddler, so I’m able to pass off rough phrasings to be legible enough for anyone that I talked to. The musicality of the sentence structure gave me an innate oral compiler for two-way communication.

Being able to converse fluently is another matter. The language itself has a notoriety of being difficult to learn, even when you’re locally educated. The amount of conjugations for a single verb can enumerate to the dozens, feel free to look up “Austronesian alignment” if you’re curious.

So I have enough to grok the rhythm and tempo of the language, without being able to play with it properly in daily speech like I normally do with English. And yet, once I know the root verb, I can just source the conjugation. For the Filipino language, grammar matters more than vocabulary.

Literacy is a solved problem. Numeracy isn’t.

If literacy cares about Alpha, numeracy cares about Omega.

  1. If literacy cares about “who’s first”, numeracy cares about “what lasts”.

I think it might be fun to dig up material on alternative numbering systems.

tk surreal number dedekind cut construction, alternative to real analysis

tk kolmogorov-chiatin complexity, what makes omega strange

tk polynesian numerals, other cultures beyond indo-arabics?

tk physical representations of numbers past the ishango bone, is that as far as we have gone?
